Hydrodec Re-refines Transformer Oils and Removes PCB Contaminants
Hydrodec is a London, UK based firm that recovers oil from electrical transformers. The firm trades on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker HYR. The company was born in 2001 in Australia, launched on the LSE in 2004, and opened its first plant in Australia in 2006. A second plant opened in the US in 2008, and the firm recently signed a joint-venture agreement with a Japanese firm to a construct a processing facility in Japan.

Electrical transformers throughout the world require special oil, known as transformer oil, for insulation and cooling. Transformer oils are highly and engineered, and are an essential part of the functioning of the transformer. However, they are subject to breakdown from thermal stress, and therefore require periodic replacement. Some oils can be sold into a secondary market and used for a variety of purposes as lower grade oils. In many cases, however, transformer oils are contaminated with PCBs and therefore cannot be reused.

Hydrodec buys used transformer oils on a spot market. It then uses its own patented process to re-refine transformer oils. The re-refined oils are then sold back into the higher value market for transformer oils, instead of into lower value markets. The process allows indefinite re-refining of transformer oils, reducing the demand for new oil production for transformers. The firm also has a patented process that removes PCBs from transformer oils, eliminating the necessity to dispose the contaminated oil. A critical benefit of Hydrodec’s refining process is that it produces no hazardous by-products. Even PCBs are entirely broken down and rendered harmless.

Both the Australian and US facilities serve both local and export markets, and grew total volumes by nearly 100 percent from 2009 to 2010. The firm only recently received regulatory approval in the US for its PCB process. It expects that approval will create higher volumes in the near future.

Since June, the price has, despite the crash in the Euro, risen by 25%

Alternative Energy Limited develops technology for distributed energy production, and it licenses and distributes other energy saving products and technologies. The company was launched on the London Stock Exchange in October, 2007 under the symbol ALR. The company is based in Singapore. It currently comprises several subsidiaries for various purposes.

The company’s operating subsidiary is Renewable Power Pte. Ltd. The firm is currently engaged exclusively in product and brand development. It’s primary product, branded as “eRoof,”is intended to be a roofing product that accomplishes several environmental objectives, while still meeting building standards commonly found in the developed world.

Beyond the normal capacities of a roof, the primary environmental objective of eRoof is to create power for the facility it covers. ARL envisions a system that includes both solar and wind power generation options, as well as a storage and management system, all of which is functional both on and off a power grid. The company also intends to create a paneling product that it brands “eClad” for the sides of large buildings, as well as a product that is functional for temporary structures. Eventually, it expects the eRoof product to contain a subsystem for collecting, managing and cleansing water for drinking and other uses.

Currently, in addition to developing eRoof, the company is participating in projects to improve the capabilities of LED lighting. The company is working on both a standard household lighting product it brands as “eLumen” and a street-light product it brands as “eLumen8.” Ultimately, the company hopes to integrate all of its technologies to develop a prefabricated solar home product, which it brands “eLive.”

Alternative Energy’s engineers are actively engaged in research on several parts of its ongoing projects. To this end, the company has established a subsidiary, Alternative Energy Technology Pte, to hold its intellectual properties.

It is worth noting the share price was on the rise at the beginning of 2011, but has fallen back after the latest Euro news.

AFC Energy is based in Surrey in the UK, near London, and is publically traded on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol AFC. It was established in 2006 to purchase technology developed by Eneco, and energy producer in the Netherlands, and has since raised capital and proceeded with development of the technology it purchased from Eneco.

AFC hopes to employ alkaline fuel cell technology in commercial applications. The company has added extensive development to existing technology, but the core technology has been known for over 150 years. Similar systems were used by NASA on the Apollo and Space Shuttle missions. At the time, however, the technology was not commercially viable due to cost.

Alkaline fuel cell technology has benefits, but challenges remain. Benefits include that it produces no harmful atmospheric emissions and has an energy conversion efficiency of 70 percent. The primary challenge to the technology is the requirement for input of pure hydrogen into the fuel cell. Producing and transporting pure hydrogen is fraught with difficulties.

AFC intends to surmount the difficulties of producing and transporting hydrogen by utilizing hydrogen that is produced as a waste product from other industrial activities and generating power on the site where the hydrogen is produced. It has developed partnerships with several firms whose facilities generate hydrogen waste products, and a reactor is currently under construction in Australia in partnership with Linc Energy. Linc Energy produces excess hydrogen from the production of coal bed methane.

The firm recently completed and has produced energy from a commercial reactor in the UK. The reactor is primarily for testing AFC’s ongoing technological advances. Eventually, the firm expects develop the technology to the point that it can produce power wherever it may be needed.

General Information:
GTL Resources is one of the top bio-refining corporations, and it has a subsidiary, Illinois River Energy, that makes over 100 million gallons of ethanol each year out of a production facility in Rochelle, Illinois. GTL created the project, got the financing, organized the building, and now manage the business. The Rochelle site is strategically positioned next to a lot of corn because of the high-yield, abundant acreage around the plant. Plus, there is quick true access vis-a-vis interstate highways, rail access to ethanol markets, and cheap access to Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles, the acronym being DDGS.

Future Strategy:
GTL’s future strategy is to enhance and strengthen its ethanol to corn manufacturing mechanism and is currently looking into technologies that can convert its ethanol plant into a more modernized bio-refining facility. The emerging technologies it is looking at include those that would create additional revenue and profit, that would tack on to the current ethanol business. GTL is looking into mergers, acquisitions, and licensing. There are practical plans in place to secure these advances in ethanol production.

Capability, expertise, and resources are used to infuse their people with energy and achieve their vision of the future. All this is done under the aegis of an ethanol production company. GTL believes that both people and technology make a difference in the economy.

Powerfilm Solar produces thin-film solar products used by companies and resellers around the world. These consist of lightweight, rollable solar panels for residential, commercial and industrial applications alike. As it operates through resellers rather than directly with clients, Powerfilm has a diverse set of markets, making them a good choice for investment. As the markets recover from the 2008 recession, indications are high that Powerfilm Solar stock will increase in value. Just in the past three months, the stock has more than doubled its value from 18p to nearly 36p.

Founded in 1988, Powerfilm has an edge on many of the younger green energy companies on the market. The company has decades of solar research and development experience. Indeed, Powerfilm is now the only company making thin-film solar products for military and consumer markets around the world. Standard solar panel producers are dependent upon the fluctuating price of silicon wafers, whereas Powerfilm uses amorphous silicon technology. When the price of silicon wafers goes up, expect Powerfilm’s stock price to go up in tandem as a short-term gain.

The company is branching out beyond thin-film solar panels into other thin semiconductor markets. It has formed a partnership with leading tech company Hewlett-Packard to develop low-cost backplane drivers for flat-screen displays. Other markets for Powerfilm’s expertise include those for RFID chips and electronic paper. As the only game in town, the company has been making all the right moves to secure positive results.

Investors saw a remarkable rally in PFLM’s price on the Alternative Investment Markets (AIM) due to the release of its 2010 results, which showed that it was clearly underpriced. Indications are strong that the company will continue to enjoy medium-term and long-term growth potential. Investors looking for green energy and cleantech stocks to invest in could do no better than Powerfilm Solar.

Proton Power Systems is, to put it delicately, a company that hasn’t quite hit its stride just yet. The company produces hybrid electric fuel cells that can supplement or back up traditional fossil-fuel-based engines during heavy industrial applications. However, a switch to fully electric cells often doesn’t provide the necessary energy for most industrial uses such as materials handling or mass transit.

Proton Power Systems’ proprietary hybrid electric fuel cells aim to solve the paradox involved with clean energy, which is that it often doesn’t provide the necessary power for heavy tasks. The cells connect with existing engines or generators to offer compromise solutions that can work according to each company’s individual needs. When using the hybrid cell, companies achieve lower fuel consumption, less emissions and consistent power delivery.

The company has been on the Alternative Investment Markets (AIM) for nearly five years now, and while shares were initially offered at significantly inflated prices due to the rush toward green energy, they have since stabilised at a level more consistent with the company’s profits and viability. Proton Power Systems is still a viable company, but it is heavily in debt. Its losses have been significantly greater than its profits for the past five years in a row. While the company has made significant advances in hybrid fuel cell technology, they haven’t been enough to turn the company into a profitable endeavour.

Nevertheless, the company has a a few bright spots. Its loss margins have decreased from year to year, and 2011 could be the year that PPS ends in the black. With a variety of industrial and mass transit clients looking for ways to save money on fuel, Proton Power Systems has a plan for moving forward. Furthermore, oil prices are expected to remain expensive, increasing demand for hybrid electric motors and fuel cells. This all potentially makes PPS an attractive candidate for future investment at rock-bottom prices.
